While full-sized trucks and burly SUVs certainly have their place, many people prefer a smaller, more fuel-efficient car even as their family’s daily driver. Fortunately, Nissan offers a welcome alternative by filling the stylish 2024 Nissan Versa with highly desirable standard features while keeping the line affordable. It’s easy to see why Car and Driver rated it 8 out of 10 and gave it first place on the magazine’s Best Subcompact Car list.

Design

The subcompact 2024 Versa is a four-door sedan seating five people. It’s easily small enough to zip into tight parking spots but has plenty of room for picking up the kids or carpooling to work. The exterior resembles Nissan’s attractive and hugely popular mid-sized Altima sedan. High-quality materials are used throughout the appealing interior, including soft upscale touches on the dash and doors.

Performance

All 2024 Versa models have a standard 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. Many drivers will love the standard 5-speed manual transmission on the base model, but all higher trim levels have a standard Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The entire lineup has excellent fuel efficiency. You can expect an average of 27 mpg on city streets and 35 mpg on the highway driving the manual transmission models. The other models are estimated to reach 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on highways.

Technology

Nissan obviously believes there’s no reason tiny cars can’t have the latest technology. Even the 2024 Versa’s lowest trim level has a lot of the same advanced features that Nissan installs in some of the brand’s larger models, such as a 7-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system, a 4-speaker audio system, and three USB ports.

Standard Bluetooth wireless connectivity provides audio streaming and hands-free calling. Now you can enjoy all your favorite audiobooks, playlists, podcasts, and other content from your phone on your commutes, road trips, or even while just running errands. You can add Apple CarPlay integration and Android Auto compatibility to the second-tier S CVT trim level with an optional S+ package. They’re both standard in all higher trim levels.

Safety

There’s no need to worry about the quality of safety provided by the 2024 Versa. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a perfect 5-star overall safety rating. Nissan has also installed important standard driver’s aid and safety features even in the line’s base model, such as:

  • Brake Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection Mitigation and Prevention
  • Rear Automatic Braking Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Hill Start Assist
